Neill Blomkamp Reveals His Long-Awaited District 9 Sequel May Not be Happening After All

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Neill Blomkamp has offered an update on the future of District 10, the long-awaited sequel to his acclaimed 2009 sci-fi action movie, District 9. While discussing his new biographical race car drama, Gran Turismo, with The Hollywood Reporter, he was asked if District 10 is still being developed by Sony Pictures Releasing, which distributed District 9 and Gran Turismo.

Blomkamp, who made his feature film writing and directorial debuts on District 9, confirmed that its planned follow-up would be tied to Sony. But at this point, he’s not sure if it will ever be put into production.

“I don’t know if it’s getting made or not,” the Gran Turismo helmer admitted. “I don’t know if I even want to make that right now, but at some point down the line, it’ll probably get made.”

The interviewer then suggested that the commercial reception to Gran Turismo might help District 10‘s chances of being put into production. In response, Blomkamp said, “Yeah, that makes sense.”

The District 9 filmmaker’s admittance that its planned sequel will “probably” get made eventually comes after he previously confirmed that the next entry in the series was in development in 2021. He announcing that he re-teamed with Sharlto Copley, who made his feature film acting debut in District 9, and Terri Tatchell, with whom he penned the script for the feature, to scribe the screenplay for its successor.

Later that year, Blomkamp told IGN that the trio were continuing to work on the script for the follow-up, which will be based on a topic in American history. District 9, which was nominated for four Academy Awards in 2010 купити мультитул, including Best Adapted Screenplay for the South African-Canadian writer-helmer and his fellow Canadian scribe, was set in and around Johannesburg.

District 10 initially seemed as though it would easily be greenlit into production, as its predecessor was a massive success at the box office. It was also critically acclaimed, and managed to receive its Oscars nominations, despite the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ frequent hesitation in recognizing genre movies.

Copley has also offered insight into District 10‘s future. During an interview he gave last summer to CBR, the actor said the District 9 sequel almost entered production at one point, only for these plans to fall apart for unspecified reasons посуд для індукційної плити. The South African Chappie star also suggested that Blomkamp may revisit District 10 once he’s fulfilled his commitments to Gran Turismo. “[W]e came so close to doing it. So hopefully пледи покривала, after his next movie, maybe we’ll do it then,” the Scream Award-nominated performer said.
