‘Ocean’s Eleven’ Prequel in the Works With Margot Robbie

‘Ocean’s Eleven’ Prequel in the Works With Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie just might be the busiest star in Hollywood these days. She’s now in the midst of shooting the lead character in Greta Gerwitz’s Barbie, a film about the iconic doll come to life. And she’ll soon be seen in four more soon-to-be-released productions: David O. Russell’s Amsterdam, Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, and Justin Kurzel’s Ruin.

This week, it’s being reported that she’s been tapped to star in a prequel to another Warner Brothers offering in the Ocean’s Eleven franchise. Though the comedy film has not yet been greenlit, it might go into production in the spring of 2023. While details about the plot are sketchy, it’s expected that the setting will be 1960s Europe, unlike other films in the franchise that were set in Las Vegas.

Jay Roach is slated to direct the new flick when and if it gets the go-ahead, based on a script by Carrie Solomon. Roach and Robbie have a track record, having worked on Bombshell, a 2019 production about sexual harassment in the workplace. Other films he directed include All the Way, Trumbo, The Campaign, Game Change, Dinner for Schmucks and Recount.

One of the most prolific purveyors of the “heist” genre, the franchise debuted in 2001 with Ocean’s Eleven, based on the 1960 film starring the so-called Rat Pack: Joey Bishop, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra. The 2001 offering starred George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Julia Roberts. Its worldwide gross totaled more than $450 million. An all-woman version, Ocean’s 8, was released in 2018, with Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and Rihanna among the leads.

Robbie and Tom Ackerly will be producing the proposed new film for LuckyChap, while Roach and Michelle Graham will be doing the same for Everyman Pictures.
