The Academy Awards celebrated a return to gathering together in-person at the Dolby Theatre with three hosts to emcee the awards: Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall. CODA went home with the Best Picture prize and two other trophies, eclipsing season-long frontrunner The Power of the Dog. Jane Campion, who is the first woman to be nominated twice for Best Director, became the third woman to take home the award, marking her film’s only win out of twelve nominations.
The film with the biggest haul was Dune, which won six of its ten nominations.
Notable statistics include supporting actor Troy Kotsur becoming the second-ever deaf actor to win an Oscar, following his costar Marlee Matlin’s victory for Children of a Lesser God thirty-five years ago, and Ariana DeBose triumphing for the same role that won Rita Moreno an Oscar in West Side Story sixty years ago. Kenneth Branagh won his first Oscar, for Best Original Screenplay for Belfast, after receiving nominations in seven separate categories over the past three decades.
The event started with a live outdoor musical performance led by Beyoncé of the nominated song Be Alive from King Richard, and included a number of star-studded moments with non-film celebrities. The show appeared to be heavily focused on attracting ratings, which led to the cutting of eight categories from the live ceremony, with trophies handed out ahead of the televised ceremony and the winners’ speeches edited into the broadcast.
It was therefore puzzling to see bits about seat fillers when the show was running well over three hours.
While some jokes landed well, an uncomfortable moment arose when Will Smith went up on stage to slap presenter Chris Rock for making a crack about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head and then swore at him.
When he later won the Oscar for Best Actor, he delivered a tearful, emotional speech in which he talked about how much he values protecting his family.
