In an interview with Parade magazine, actor revealed he was indeed paid in marijuana for his role in narrating the prologue to the 1974 slasher film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The deal had been rumored for years but not confirmed until now.

As Larroquette put it, director Tobe Hooper “gave me some marijuana or a matchbox or whatever you called it in those days.

I walked out of the [recording] studio and patted him on the back side and said, ‘Good luck to you!'”

Larroquette had originally met Hooper in 1969 in Colorado when the actor was working as a bartender and the director had come to the area to do a shoot. The two developed a friendship, and when Larroquette moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career in 1973, Hooper asked him to narrate the iconic film that was then in development.

Like many other films of that era and genre, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was produced on a low budget—less than $140,000. It has since become part of a lucrative franchise that over the years spawned nine films as well as comic books and video games. The franchise has reportedly earned upwards of million (in cash, not weed) over the past half century.

The 1974 film was inspired by the exploits of real-life serial killer Ed Gein, though the storyline is entirely fictional. It narrates the fate of several teenagers who are murdered by a chainsaw-wielding maniac with a mask made of human flesh. Because of its graphic images, the film was banned in a number of countries in Europe and Latin America.

Larroquette provided narration for several of the later films in the Massacre franchise, including the most recent one, released in February of 2022. The actor later starred as Dan Fielding in Night Court and The Librarians. He did not reveal whether he was brought up on charges there or remained silent.
