“17-year-old Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu when she encounters a young man who tells her, ‘I’m looking for a door,’” reads the film’s synopsis. “What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly drawn by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob. Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.”

Director Makoto Shinkai recalls, “For the past 10 years (since 2011), I have been making films while thinking about 3.11,” and he chose the Great East Japan Earthquake as the theme for this film as well. Your Name and The Weathering with You depicted the earthquake disaster in a different form, as a disaster brought about by comets and weather, but this film directly depicts the disaster by making a high school girl who lost her parents in the earthquake and had to leave her hometown the main character. At a press conference to report on the completion of the film, Shinkai said, “Most of the audience is in their teens, and the disaster as a shared experience is fading. But maybe now we can share the same feelings,” he said of his feelings.”

The anime film was written and directed by Shinkai. The creative team includes character designer Masayoshi Tanaka, animation director Kenichi Tsuchiya, and art director Takumi Tanji. They Teamed up with CoMix Wave Films and Story Inc.

The film earned a worldwide gross of over $320 million at the box office. Just like Shinkai’s previous movies, such as Your Name and Weathering With You, Suzume also received critical success and currently holding 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
