Actress Sydney Sweeney is reportedly playing Spider-Woman in Sony’s anticipated superhero movie, Madame Web. The news of the Emmy-nominated Euphoria star potentially playing Spider-Woman in the upcoming screen adaptation of the Marvel Comic was presented on the latest episode of film critic Jeff Sneider’s podcast, The Hot Mic.
The movie reporter explained that he isn’t sure which Spider-Woman the actress portrayed in Madame Web, whose production wrapped in mid-January. He noted that multiple characters have used the name in the comics.
However, previous rumors have suggested that Sweeney portrayed Julia Carpenter, the second in-continuity Spider-Woman within the MCU and Marvel comics. The performer has also mentioned the character herself.
Sneider also noted on The Hot Mic that Julia’s involvement in Madame Web is an important aspect of Sony’s plot for the upcoming film. In the comics, Julia is the second and current iteration of the titular character, succeeding the late Cassandra Webb. If the movie reporter is correct, it means that Julia will make her live-action debut when the feature is released in theaters in February 2024.
Dakota Johnson is leading Madame Web as the titular Spider-Man character. Since Sweeney is reportedly playing Julia, it’s likely that the BAFTA Award-nominated Johnson portrayed Cassandra in the film.
Besides Johnson and Sweeney, the movie also stars Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Isabela Merced (Transformers: The Last Knight) and Emma Roberts (American Horror Story). The film’s cast includes Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps (The Upshaws) and Adam Scott (Severance), as well.
Madame Web was created by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr. in 1980. The character is a blind psychic that has become a major character in the Spider-Man universe, due to her ties to The Great Web, a multiversal construct that ties all Spider characters together across the multiverse.
Sony has released the following synopsis for Madame Web: The movie will be an origin story of the clairvoyant, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world.
Madame Web was written by Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The upcoming film is being directed by Jessica Jones helmer, S.J. Clarkson.
