As its worldwide box office gross nears $750 million, The Batman officially has a streaming premiere date. Deadline confirms that the film will arrive on HBO Max on Monday, April 18th, with an official airing on HBO on Saturday, April 23rd at 8pm ET. Last month, a tech glitch on the HBO Max site erroneously revealed a debut a day later, on April 19th.
This cements the policy of Warner Bros.
films hitting HBO Max exactly forty-five days after their theatrical debuts, which we reported back in January. The company had a more controversial approach in 2021, when its entire slate, which included big-budget tentpoles like Dune and The Matrix Resurrections, debuted on HBO Max the same day as they were released in theaters. In the month or so that The Batman has been in theaters, it has already more than doubled the combined domestic theatrical take of both of those films, currently tracking at $359 million.
Joining The Batman on HBO Max is a spinoff series, The Penguin, which will star Colin Farrell in the same role he played in the film and has already been given a straight-to-series order. Peacemaker, which itself was a spinoff of The Suicide Squad, has already been a success for the relatively young streaming service, and the DC Extended Universe should only continue to gain popularity as its newest high-profile film arrives.
Robert Pattinson stars in The Batman as the title character, also known as Bruce Wayne, supported by a terrific ensemble that includes Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle (Catwoman), Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin), and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon. Matt Reeves served as director, producer, and co-writer, penning the script with Peter Craig. Dylan Clark produced, and executive producers included Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada, Chantal Nong Vo and Simon Emanuel.
