In an interview at the Toronto Film Festival, Demi Moore said Sony is discussing making a sequel to St. Elmo’s Fire, which debuted in 1985 under the direction of Joel Schumacher.

“The update is definitely, conversations are happening,” Moore was quoted as telling Brent Lang of Variety. “[The] studio has been really behind [and] driving this. As far as I know, everyone seems to be up for it, which I think would be amazing.”

She added that a script has not yet been crafted and that Sony is “looking for the right partner” to create it. “Then I think we would all probably start to jump in and figure out who are these people this many years later,” Moore added. “It was such a pivotal film for all of us involved. And…having participated with Andrew McCarthy on his doc…it would be a real joy.”

Moore was referring to Brats, a documentary that McCarthy made about the cast of the 1985 movie. St Elmo’s Fire, which focused on the relationships and career anxieties of a group of twentysomething college buddies. The film, which ultimately grossed $38 million, starred Moore, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe. Ally Sheedy, Mara Winningham, Judd Nelson, and Andrew McCarthy, among others. The group became known unofficially as the Brat Pack after an article appeared in New York magazine—the name is a humorous spin on the 1960s Rat Pack that included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Peter Lawford.

Moore most recently appeared in Coralie Fargeat‘s The Substance, which had an enthusiastic response from audiences at Cannes. The so-called “body horror” film, which focuses on an aging actress who uses a miracle drug to create a younger version of herself, is a critique of the grotesque obsession with good looks that pervades the entertainment industry.
