Tom Cruise is rumored to be interested in playing the villain in Joseph Kosinski‘s new film adaptation of the iconic 1980s NBC series ”Miami Vice”at Universal Pictures, according to a report from scooped DanielRPK.

The script for Mid-1980s Miami, written by Dan Gilroy and Eric Warren Singer, will explore both the glamour and corruption of the city as it follows two undercover detectives.

It is said that the project draws its inspiration from the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series, which was produced by Michael Mann and had a significant impact on both television and cultural landscape.

Mann, who was responsible for Cruise’s highly acclaimed villain role in 2004’s ”Collateral,” was the director of a 2006 re-make of ”Miami Vice” that had a gritty modern edge.

Austin Butler is being considered to play James ‘Sonny’ Crockett, and Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan is being considered to portray his on-screen partner, undercover detective Ricardo ‘Rico’ Tubbs, according to the most recent report.

In the event that Cruise signs on, it would be Kosinski’s third film after ”Oblivion” and ”Top Gun: Maverick”.
