Tom Cruise To Star in Upcoming ‘Top Gun 3’ Sequel, Says Producer Bruckheimer

Tom Cruise will be returning in the role of Maverick in the upcoming Top Gun 3 movie, which will be a sequel to Top Gun Maverick, the $1.4 billion blockbuster directed by Joseph Kosinski in 2022. The original Top Gun film was directed by Tony Scott in 1986. Miles Teller and Glen Powell will also be reprising their roles in the new production.
It’s not yet been confirmed whether Kosinski would be returning to direct Top Gun 3, whose script is being written by Ehren Kruger.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed Cruise’s participation, declaring “It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible [8] right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.”

Back in January, Glen Powell told Variety: “People looked at me like I knew what was going on. There is going to be some fun stuff being announced soon…but it was confidential to me. I talk to [Joseph] Kosinski, Cruise, and Jerry [Bruckheimer] all the time. There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting. I don’t know when I’ll be going back…I’m sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future.”

Despite the overall enthusiasm, it appears to be a growing consensus that fans may have to wait several years before Top Gun 3 sees the light of the silver screen. When Bruckheimer mentioned that Cruise had another picture after Mission: Impossible 8, he was reportedly alluding to a yet-undisclosed project with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Cruise also may have other new projects lined up via his new partnership with Warner Brothers.

Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick are both currently streaming on Paramount+, while the latter film is also available on Amazon Prime Video.
