After last June’s sold-out run, Kotsu-Kotsu returns in a newly expanded 60-minute version.

This piece was born from a simple hypothesis of mine: If “Kun-Chan manga” spread all over the world, perhaps wars would disappear, and the Earth could become a quieter, warmer place.

“Kun-Chan manga” refers to a beloved genre of Japanese comics—such as Crayon Shin-chan, Chibi Maruko-chan, and Doraemon—in which the title bears the name of the protagonist and humorously depicts their ordinary, everyday life. I grew up watching and reading these stories, and through them, I learned how to notice love and happiness within the small moments of daily life shared with family and friends.

With Kotsu-Kotsu, I am attempting to bring that sensibility into dialogue with the storytelling power of American theatre.

If, after seeing this piece, you find yourself noticing the whiteness of your breath on the walk home, the brightness of the moon, or the chill of the New York air with fresh eyes, there would be no greater joy for me.
