MUBI has unveiled the complete trailer for Coralie Fargeat’s upcoming dark body horror film The Substance, which stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley.

Ghost, G.I. Jane star Demi Moore is tackling the role of Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister who is past her prime and is abruptly terminated from her fitness TV show by Harvey played by Denis Quaid(The Hill, The Long Game), a repulsive studio head.

She is captivated by the chance that the substance, a mysterious new drug, presents. With one injection, she is temporarily transformed into the beautiful, twenty-something Sue played by Margaret Qualley(Kinds of Kindness, Drive-AwayDolls).

There is only one rule that she has to obey, splitting time into one week for one body is necessary, followed by one week for the other, a perfect balance with no exceptions. Well, curious to know how that’s gonna work?

In the trailer, we see Moore’s character transform into Sue. Things take a turn when Moore’s character is on the phone and says that “there’s been a slight misuse of the substance.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell this story,” Moore said the Good Morning America about the film in May. “It was a very vulnerable experience and just required going into it with a sensitivity and a lot of conversion about what we were trying to accomplish, how we were going to approach it.”

The film nabbed the best screenplay at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, will get a theatrical release via MUBI. Besides Demi and Margaret, the film also stars Gore Abrams, Hugo Diego Garcia, Olivier Raynal, and Tiffany Hofstetter. And produced by Tim Bevan, Coralie Fargeat, Eric Fellner, Aledandra Loewy, Nicolas Royer.

The Substance will hit cinemas nationwide on September 20th.
