Warner Brothers has dropped a teaser trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, a highly anticipated followup to the 1988 Tim Burton classic starring Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder.

After an unexpected family tragedy, The Deetz family return home to Winter River,” reads the sequel‘s synopsis. “Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

After the great success of Netflix’s Wednesday series, Scream VI star Jenna Ortega reunites with Burton. Joining Ortega are returning stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. The sequel will also introduce new characters played by Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe.

Even if it’s a minute of clip, much of the DNA that made the first movie so captivating can be seen and felt, from  unsettling deep synth chords from Danny Elfman’s soundtrack, and also features a glimpse of the returning and new characters, including Jenna Ortega taking on the role of Astrid, the daughter of the iconic Lydia Deetz played by Winona Ryder, who is reprising her role.

Catherine O’Hara is also returning as Delia Deetz, the three generations of the Deetz family together and it all leads to the grand reveal of Keaton’s demon Beetlejuice, who rises from the model town to the horror of Lydia and utters, “The juice is loose!”

“The relationship between Lydia and Astrid, my character, is very important,” Ortega previously told Vanity Fair of the upcoming sequel. “And it’s also really strange because it’s a lot of catching up and putting the pieces together of what’s gone on in Lydia’s life since, which is nice, I think, for anybody who loves the character and is excited to see her again.”

The film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to hit theaters on Friday, September 6, 2024.
