Attack on Titan is moving from the page to the stage.

A musical based on the popular manga series is set to make its debut in Osaka on January 7-9 before a 10-day run in Tokyo’s Seinenkan Hall later in the month. At the moment, however, there are no plans to stream the musical outside of Japan.

The project was announced this week by Kodansha, which publishes the Attack on Titan manga series that was created by Hajime Isayama. The series had its inception in 2009 and comprised 34 volumes until it ended last year. According to a report by Anime News Network, the upcoming musical is set to “combine traditional staging and music with the latest technology.”

Heading the cast in the new stage production will be Kurumu Okamiya as Fren, Sara Tataksuki as Mikasa, Eito Konishi as Armin, and Ryo Matsuda as Lev.

Attack on Titan has been enormously popular worldwide, with more than 110 million tankobon copies in print, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. According to the storyline, humans are reduced to living in enormous walled cities to be protected from the predatory Titans, portrayed as flesh-eating humanoids.

The hero, Eren Yeager, vows to do battle with them when the Titans destroy his hometown and kill his mother.

The stage adaptation will be directed by Go Ueki based on a script by Masafumi Hata.

A teaser-trailer for the post-apocalyptic production was released on Monday, complete with a preview of the film’s score. Musical director will be the hip-hop artist Ken the 390 collaborating with lyricist Kaori Miura.

Producers are keeping their fingers crossed in the hope the staging will proceed without misfortune this time. In 2017, an accident on stage reportedly cost the life of the acrobatics director, causing a temporary hiatus.

This is not the first time Attack on Titan will have been adapted into other media. An anime television series produced by Wit Studios (seasons 1-3) and MAPPA (season 4) was broadcast beginning in 2013 and ending in 2020.
