Netflix Will Begin Streaming SAG Awards Live in 2024 as Guild Announces Surprising 2023 Nominees

The Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards will begin streaming live on Netflix worldwide next year, after the guild and streamer signed a new multi-year partnership. Netflix announced the deal today, as SAG also presented the nominees for this year’s ceremony.

While discussing the new partnership, SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said: “We are thrilled to embark on this exciting new partnership with Netflix and we look forward to expanding the global audience for our show. As the only televised awards program exclusively honoring the performances of actors, whose work is admired by millions of fans, the SAG Awards are a unique and cherished part of the entertainment universe.”

Netflix Head of Global TV Bela Bajaria also chimed in on the partnership: “The SAG Awards are beloved by the creative community and viewers alike, and now even more fans around the world will be able to celebrate these talented actors. As we begin to explore live streaming on Netflix, we look forward to partnering with SAG-AFTRA to elevate and expand this special ceremony as a global live event in 2024 and the years to come.”

The news that Netflix picked up the SAG Awards telecast comes after TNT and TBS decided that last year’s ceremony would be the last they would broadcast. The awards ceremony was telecast on TNT from 1998 to last year, and was also simulcast on TBS from 2007 to last year.

This year’s 29th Annual SAG awards is scheduled to be broadcast on Netflix’s YouTube Channel on Sunday, February 26 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. The ceremony will celebrate the outstanding film and television performances of 2022.

This year’s SAG Awards ceremony will be presented by SAG-AFTRA with Screen Actors Guild Awards, LLC. The show will be executive produced by Jon Brockett and produced by Avalon Harbor Entertainment.

Nominees for the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards honoring outstanding individual, cast and ensemble performances for the past year were announced this morning by Ashley Park (Emily in Paris) and Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus) via Instagram Live on the SAG Awards and Netflix’s accounts.

The nominees for outstanding action performances by film and television stunt ensembles were announced by SAG Awards Committee Members Jason George and Elizabeth McLaughlin. They were introduction by SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher.

Besides the news that Netflix will begin livestreaming the SAG Awards ceremony next year, there were also several nominations and snubs that Hollywood considers surprising.

The surprise nominations include Adam Sandler in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role category for his role in the Netflix drama, Hustle. The actor-comedian gave one of the most dramatic performances of his his career as Stanley Sugarman, a basketball scout who risks his career on an unproven talent. The role garnered him his first SAG nomination.

Two other surprise nominations were The Whale performer Hong Chau and Everything Everywhere All at Once star Stephanie Hsu. The two were both nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role category. They both received recognition for their portrayals, but neither received a Golden Globe nomination.

Two other surprise nominations came in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series category: Steve Carell was nominated for his performance in FX’s The Patient, which didn’t receive much attention when it was first released. But it was praised for its storytelling and performance by Carrell, who was previously nominated him for The Morning Show in 2020, Battle of the Sexes in 2018, Foxcatcher in 2015 and The Office between 2007 and 2012.

Elliott, meanwhile, was nominated for his role in the Yellowstone prequel series, 1883. He was previously nominated for his role in A Star Is Born in 2019.

There were also several snubs by the Screen Actors Guild for this year’s ceremony, including Michelle Williams in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role category for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film, The Fabelmans. She received Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations for her performance, and was believed to be a frontrunner to be nominated by the SAG Awards. But she’s still nominated as part of the drama’s ensemble.

There were also several movies that were shockingly absent from the SAG Awards’ Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category. Those films include Glass Onion, The Woman King, Elvis and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, especially after the latter two won Golden Globes last night. The movies all received acclaim, and the first Black Panther even won in the category four years ago.

Other actors who were snubbed were Sebastian Stan and Lily James for their performances in the titular roles in Hulu’s biographical limited drama television series, Pam and Tommy. The show received acclaim and multiple Golden Globes, Critics Choice and Primetime Emmy nominations. Those nods include spots in the acting categories at all three awards shows for Stan’s performance as Tommy Lee, and James’ portrayal of his ex-wife, Pamela Anderson.
