From Death to Resurrection: Mel Gibson Reportedly at Work on ‘The Passion of the Christ’ Sequel

Mel Gibson is reportedly ready to begin filming a sequel to his 2004 hit The Passion of the Christ. Titled The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, the new film would focus on the three days after the crucifixion, culminating on Easter Sunday, when Christ is believed to have risen from the dead.

According to published reports, Jim Caviezel will be returning in the role of Jesus Christ. Back in 2020, he told reporters that Gibson and scriptwriter Randall Wallace were then working on a third draft of the script, which the actor said was going to be “the biggest film in world history .” Randall Wallace is also known for his script for Braveheart, Gibson’s 1995 Mel Gibson historical epic about medieval Scotland.

At least three more drafts have been completed since then, with production scheduled to begin this spring, says the World of Reel.

When The Passion of the Christ was released in 2004, the film had grossed more than $600 million worldwide, though it cost only $30 million to create, making it one of the most successful indie films in history schweizer online casinos. Little has been revealed about the Resurrection sequel, though Gibson had told Stephen Colbert in a 2016 interview where he was headed: “It’s not just some chronological telling of just that event.
