Daisy Edgar-Jones will be starring in Twisters,—note the plural—a sequel to Twister, the 1996 blockbuster for Amblin Entertainment that earned nearly $500 in global box-office receipts., making it arguably the most memorable tornado-centric film since The Wizard of Oz. The new film is being cofinanced by Warner Bros.
Lee Isaac Chung will be directing Twisters using a script by Mark L. Smith. The original Twister was directed by Jan De Boni using a screenplay by author Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. Steven Spielberg was one of the executive producers. It was the first film released on DVD in the United States.
The 1996 film starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as a pair of romantically entangled storm chasers whose own relationship was spiraling out of control. The central character, Jo Thornton, became a meteorologist after a childhood trauma when her home was destroyed and her father killed by a twister in Oklahoma. Twister portrayed Jo’s stormy episodes with Bill Harding, her estranged husband, a TV weatherman who had traveled to Oklahoma to finalize their divorce. The film was noted for its advanced THX sound design, which simulated as never before the sheer power of a tornado for moviegoers.
Edgar-Jones was noted recently for her acclaimed appearances in Normal People and Where the Crawdads Sing. The latter film, produced by Sony, was based on the best-selling novel by Delia Owens; it grossed $136 million worldwide. Normal People was based on the best-selling novel by Sally Rooney. Edgar-Jones also appeared in Fresh and in the limited series Under the Banner of Heaven, earning a Golden Globe nomination. She is presently filming Daniel Minihan’s On Swift Horses, starring opposite Jacob Elordi, Will Poulter and Diego Calva.
The London-born actress, who turns 25 in May, began her performance career in 2016 with the television series Cold Feet (2016-2020) and War of the Worlds (2019-2021). Her mother, Wendy Edgar-Jones, is a Northern Irish film editor, and her Scots father, Philip Edgar-Jones, is head of entertainment at Sky Arts.
Twisters is forecast to touch down in theaters on July 19, 2024.
