Hulu has dropped a new trailer for “Flamin’ Hot,” an Eva Lonoria directed film about a former Frito-Lay janitor Richard Montañez(played by Jesse Garcia), a go-getting Mexican American who in real life claims he went from working as a janitor at Frito-Lay to inventing the one of the most successful Flamin’ Hot Cheetos snack products.

Montañez’s story is that while he was working at the Rancho Cucamonga Frito-Lay plant, he came up the idea of spicing up Cheetos with chili powder. He contacted executives to pitch the snack and subsequently outsmarted corporate saboteurs, leading him to become a successful author and businessman.

But there’s a flip side to that, the accuracy of Montañez’s story is disputed by Frito-Lay itself, which, in a Los Angeles Time article from May 2021, said employees located in the Upper Midwest actually created Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

Frito-Lay told the Times, “We value Richard’s many contributions to our company, especially his insights into Hispanic consumers, but we do not credit the creation of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos or any Flamin’ Hot products to him.”

The film also stars Annie Gonzales, Dennis Haysbert, Tony Shalhoub, Matt Walsh and Emilio Rivera.

The film is helmer Longoria, whose acting portfolio includes playing Gabrielle Solis in “Desperate Housewives” and Isabella Braña in the soap opera “The Young and the Restless.” 

The film had its world premiere at SXSW where it was named the Audience Award winner in the festival’s Headliners section. The project was originally scheduled to launch on Hulu, but the move to both platforms aims to ensure a wider viewership – now, it will also be made available on Disney+ internationally. “Flamin” Hot” clocks in at 98-minute runtime and launches on June 9th on both Disney and Hulu.
