Exactly a year after the box office success of director Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis movie last year, now, the “Euphoria“ actor Jacob Elordi stars as Elvis and the “Mare of Easttown“ actress Cailee Spaeny plays the title role in director Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” which debuted its first trailer from The A24, film is based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir Elvis and Me.
Here’s the synopsis : When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a gentle best friend.
Through Priscilla’s eyes, Sofia Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland, in this deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy, and fame.
Penned by Coppola herself and based on Priscilla’s bestselling 1985 memoir *Elvis and Me—*with the living legend also serving as an executive producer—the upcoming release will chronicle the pair’s controversial romance and chart Priscilla’s life from the age of 15 to 27. She famously met the superstar when she was just 14, and he was 24 and in the midst of military service in Germany. The pair tied the knot when she was 21; they had a daughter, Lisa Marie, a year later; and finally separated after six years of marriage.
“Priscilla is such a minor character in [Elvis] so I never felt like I was treading on the same territory,” Coppola told Vogue last October, as she was gearing up to shoot Priscilla. “I think it’ll be interesting to have two completely different interpretations of the same events. There are some aspects of Elvis’s career included [in this film] but it all sort of plays out in the background of their relationship and her developing her identity. I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland. She was going through all the stages of young womanhood in such an amplified world—kind of similarly to Marie Antoinette.”
Coppola gathered some of her key creative team like cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd and production designer Tamara Deverell, which also stars Dagmara Dominczyk and Luke Humphrey. “Priscilla” is directed and written by Coppola, who also serves as a producer alongside Youree Henry, Lorenzo Mieli of The Apartment, Fremantle Company and American Zoetrope. The production is financed by The Apartment and Sony’s Stage 6 Films.
The film was shot late last year, and is on track for an Autumn release in theaters.
