Bleecker Street has dropped a new trailer for an engaging historical film, “Golda” which is starring Helen Mirren as an influential Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir.

“Golda“ is a ticking-clock thriller set during the tense 19 days of the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir (Helen Mirren), faced with the potential of Israel’s complete destruction, must navigate overwhelming odds, a skeptical cabinet, and a complex relationship with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (Liev Schreiber), with millions of lives in the balance. Her tough leadership and compassion would ultimately decide the fate of her nation and leave her with a controversial legacy around the world.

In the trailer, “Golda” is seen sparring intensely with various contemporaries, including Henry Kissinger played by Liev Schreiber, who also makes a startling transformation, totally looking unrecognizable in his presentation of the former US politician.

Meir served as Israel’s prime minister between 1969 and 1974. She stood as a powerful global figure but is said to have held onto the guilt of those lost in the Yom Kippur War until her last days.

“Golda” isn’t the first film in which Mirren portrayed a notable Jewish figure. She starred as Jewish refugee Maria Altmann in the 2015 drama “Woman in Gold” which earned her a SAG Award nod.

Mirren, who garnered an Oscar for playing a Queen Elizabeth in 2006’s “The Queen,” and she faced backlash when her casting as Meir was announced last year, with some people said a Jewish person should have been cast in the role instead of Mirren, who is not Jewish. After this trailer, it might change people’s opinions.

“Golda” is set to premiere on August 25.
