When this year’s Emmy nominations were announced last month, there was one wholly unexpected underdog that found a spot in the Best Comedy Series lineup: Freevee’s Jury Duty. The eight-episode series presents a jury trial that’s entirely invented, save for one element.

While everyone else involved with the show is an actor, Ronald Gladden doesn’t know that it’s all scripted, making for a highly unique social experiment turned viewing experience.

I had the chance to speak with producer Nicholas Hatton about the concept for this show and what they knew they needed to have in place to make it work.

He discussed the risks – like Ronald figuring it all out or COVID shutting the whole thing down – and the truly surprising and wonderful success of the show.

Series summary:

Jury Duty chronicles the inner workings of an American jury trial through the eyes of one particular juror, Ronald Gladden. What Gladden doesn’t know is that the entire case is fake, everyone except him is an actor, including James Marsden, and everything that happens — inside the courtroom and out — is carefully planned.
