Matthew Vaughn has revealed that his new Kick-Ass film, already in production, is going to be the third installment in a new trilogy. The first move in the threesome, which has already been completed, is titled School Fight. It was produced by Vaughn and directed by Damien Walter.
As Vaughn explained to Collider in an exclusive interview: “The trilogy will be School Fight, this movie — let’s call it Vram for the time being — and then [the] Kick-Ass [reboot], and they’re all connected.”
It’s been fourteen years since fans were treated to the first film in the Kick-Ass franchise. The original movie had been released in 2010, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Mark Strong, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Nicholas Cage. Vaughn produced a sequel in 2013, directed by Jeff Wadlow. It’s being speculated that Taylor-Johnson and Moretz will likely not be cast in the new film, however.
The Kick-Ass concept was originally developed as a comic series by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. It portrays the exploits of Dave Lizewski, a teenager with superhero ambitions who joins forces with Hit-Girl, a young woman with an equal passion for fighting crime.
Vaughn was quoted by Entertainment Weekly in October as saying that the reboot was underway: “Kick-Ass changed people’s perception of what a superhero film is. We’re doing it again. None of the other characters from the other Kick-Ass are in it, though we’d like to have them back after the reboot. I can’t really talk about it, but it’s fun!”
According to Vaughn, the upcoming Kick-Ass movie will be set in what he called “a very, very, meta-universe” that is “gonna be a cliché coming out of this head of mine.” He reiterated his assertion that the Kick-Ass films were “reinventing and creating an R-rated superhero” that no one else was doing.
Vaughn jokingly told interviewer Maggie Lovitt back in October that he’d “probably get sued” for the third Kick-Ass installment because his scriptwriters wrote ‘something that is so fucking crazy.”
Meanwhile, Matthew Vaughn’s next film, an espionage thriller named Argylle, is scheduled to be released on February 2.
