German-born filmmaker Moritz Mohr has been directing short films and television for almost two decades, but with Boy Kills World, he takes on his first feature film, a violent and gory revenge thriller starring Bill Skarsgård (It, Barbarian) as the deaf and mute Boy who seeks revenge for the murder of his mother and sister during an annual event called “The Culling.” It’s the mastermind idea to quell overpopulation by the country’s despotic leader, Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen) and her family, who Boy spends decades training in order to take down their regime.
Mohr takes a different approach to the revenge flick than the likes of John Wick, Monkey Man, and others, since Boy Kills World is rather comedic, much of that coming from the presence of Andrew Koji (Snake Eyes) and Isaiah (It Chapter Two) Mustafa’s Basho and Benny, who help Boy get to the Van Der Koys, played by Jessica Rothe, Michelle Dockery, Brett Gelman, and Sharlto Copley.
Cinema Daily US got on Zoom with Mohr for the following interview, to talk about the project he spent many years developing, including the casting process and choreographing some of the film’s crazy action sequences.
