‘Blue Eye Samurai’ To Return for Second Netflix Season, Likely in 2028

Blue Eye Samurai, the highly acclaimed anime series by Blue Spirit, will be returning to Netflix for a second season, say its creators. Executive producers Amber Noizumi and Michael Green joined supervising director Jane Wu in announcing work is already underway on new episodes for the Emmy-nominated series, even though they may not debut until 2028.

The trio was quoted as saying that “the team is going even bigger for the new episodes.” Green further stated that “We’re excited how it’s coming along. It’s going great. We have the best team you could ask for working, applying all their talent and experience into doing the impossible again. And more of the impossible, and celebrating what we got good at and trying some really new crazy things too.”

While Wu was reluctant to give more details other than to say she was in close communication with her colleagues, Greene noted that the director was “texting people approvals or giving notes in real time…so when we finish talking to you, we’ll check our email and see the latest designs or early storyboards for our first episode.”

Set in Japan during the Edo period in the seventeenth century, Blue Eye Samurai narrates the story of Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine), a woman warrior of mixed Japanese and European ancestry. It made its debut in November, 2023 with Netflix announcing soon afterwards that a second season was in the offing. At that time, Green and Noizumi, a husband-and-wife team, declared that “Mizu has a lot more blood to spill!”

The producers added that “When we started this project, we made a commitment to take this very personal story set in Edo-period Japan and bring it to life in the most authentic and beautiful way possible. Our animators, historians, musicians, martial artists and voice cast made this a reality beyond our expectations. We are thankful to our entire team and to our viewers from all over the world who have shown such passion for Mizu and her path of revenge. … We are deeply grateful to our incredible partners at Netflix for letting the journey continue.”

Other cast members who lent their voices to the project  (partial listing) included George Takei, Masi Oka, Brenda Song, Darren Barnet, Randall Park, Kenneth Branagh, Stephanie Hsu, Harry Shum, Jr., Mark Dacascos, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.

Season 1 of Blue Eye Samurai, a hit with both critics and audiences, was nominated for two Emmy awards: one for Outstanding Animated Program and another for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation.
