‘Conclave’ Composer Volker Bertelmann on Finding the Right Sound for the Vatican Thriller (Video Interview)

In the time between getting his first Oscar nomination for scoring the film Lion and winning the Oscar for scoring, All Quiet on the Western Front, German composer and pianist Volker Bertelmann has remained busy, balancing his film and television work with a career as a solo artist under the moniker of “Hauschka.” Bertelmman’s latest score for Conclave, reunites him with his All Quiet director, Edward Berger, and it’s another score that could get the composer back into the Oscar race for a third time.

Cinema Daily US spoke to Bertelmann recently about his ongoing collaboration with Edward Berger and how discovering an enigmatic instrument called the “Cristal Caschet” helped find the right sound for Conclave.
