A live-action version of Disney’s hit animated film Tangled is currently in development. The Greatest Showman helmer Michael Gracey is in negotiations with the studio to direct the revival of the Oscar-nominated 2010 feature, Deadline is reporting.
The upcoming remake will be a modern retelling of the classic Rapunzel fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. The live-action movie will follow in the contemporary footsteps of the previous feature, which was the 50th animated feature released by Disney. Exact plot details for the new adaptation have not yet been revealed. However, it’s believed that the film will follow the storyline of its animated predecessor.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who wrote such movies as Thor: Love and Thunder and Sony’s upcoming reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer, penned the most recent draft of Tangled‘s script. Kristin Burr will produce the Disney film for her company, Burr! Productions. She’ll be joined by Emmy-winning producer Lucy Kitada (The Baby-Sitters Club).
The animated version of Tangled was directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard. The movie featured the voice of Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, a spirited young princess with magical, golden hair. She escapes from her isolated tower for the first time in her life to experience the world.
Rapunzel embarks on an adventure with a charming thief (Zachary Levi). Along the way, she discovers her true identity and face the dangerous truth about the woman (Donna Murphy) who kept her captive.
The musica; grossed over $590 million worldwide. Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater crafted the music for the movie, which was nominated for an Academy Award for its original song, I See the Light.
After the animated musical’s release, it was followed by Tangled Ever After, a short that played before the 3D theatrical re-release of Beauty and the Beast and on Disney Channel. The movie was also followed by the Disney Channel animated series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure. In the years following the comedy’s release, Disney considered making an animated sequel, but ultimately never made the follow-up.
There have been reports about a live-action sequel being in development for some time. Levi even suggested that Timothée Chalamet take over his role of Flynn in the newly announced live-action film. No official casting details have yet enbe released.
Gracey is best known for making his directorial debut on The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum. The movie garnered more than $435 million worldwide and earned a Grammy and a Golden Globe.
Most recently, Gracey co-wrote, helmed and produced Better Man. The semi-autobiographical musical chronicles the life of British pop icon Robbie Williams, who’s portrayed as a chimpanzee. After it premiered at Telluride, the film will be released in the U.S. on Christmas Day by Paramount Pictures.
The filmmaker is also slated to direct Paramount’s adaptation of the bestselling children’s book, Nevermoor. Gracey will also produce and direct a musical based on the life of opera singer Luciano Pavarotti for the West End.
Disney has continued to prioritize its live-action remakes that focus on popular characters in recent years. Director Barry Jenkins’ prequel movie, Mufasa: The Lion King, will be released theaters in theaters on December 20. Meanwhile, the Rachel Zegler-starring Snow White is set to premiere in theaters on March 21, 2025. Additionally, the live-action version of Lilo & Stitch recently unveiled its teaser trailer ahead of its May 23, 2025 release.
