Searchlight Pictures is working with Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda on a yet-unnamed English-language film that will star the British actor Eddie Redmayne. Kore-eda will write the script, to be produced by Redmayne in collaboration with Jonathan King and Ash Sarohia.

Over a three-decade career, Kore-eda has created an impressive body of work that includes After Life, Maborosi, Still Walking, Like Father, Like Son, and After the Storm. One of his first documentaries, August Without Him, was released in 1994. It depicted his friendship with Hirata Yutaka, who was suffering from AIDS. While Kore-eda’s filmography is often compared to that of Yasujiro Ozu, he has said he has said he feels more influenced by the work of Ken Loach and Mikio Naruse. 

Released in 2018, Kore-eda’s film Shoplifters was one of the most acclaimed Japanese films in recent years, grossing $72 million at the global box office. it won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes,Film Festival in addition to being Japan’s official submission to the Oscars, receiving a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Kore-eda also directed The Truth, a French feature, and Broker, a Korean feature. His most recent works are Monster, which will be released by Neon later this year, and Sheep in the Box, based on the manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto.

The 44-year old Redmayne will be seen later this year opposite Julia Roberts in the Warner Bros. production of Panic Carefully. He won an Oscar for his performance as Steven Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Redmayne recently captured Golden Globe, SAG, and Critics Choice nominations for his appearance in  which recently premiered on Peacock/Sky with him as He also one of the producers. The versatile actor also produced the revival of Cabaret in London’s West End, which starred Jessie Buckley. Cabaret received nine Tony Award nominations when it came to Broadway.

Further details about the upcoming Searchlight film have not yet been released.
