“Spring Breakers 2” has appointed a new director who was previously a Disney star after restructuring the creative team.
The follow-up to Harmony Korine‘s 2013 indie hit was initially slated to be helmed by Matthew Bright, an acclaimed director of films like “Freeway“, “Ted Bundy“, and “Tip Toes“.
However, former Disney star Bella Thorne confirmed in an interview with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast that she will be writing and directing the sequel. This will mark her second directorial effort following the star’s feature film directorial debut with Color Your Hurt.
She further mentioned that the sequel will be distinct from the original. She said, “This time, things are different. There’s a lot of craziness, and there’s a lot of lines in this movie. Part two of the cult classic is titled “Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain“. Thorne is also leading the cast of the movie alongside Grace Van Dien, Ariel Martin, and True Whitaker.
The Disney actor was initially selected for one of the main parts in the follow-up. However, on Alex Cooper’s podcast, she noted that the producers requested she write a script as a trial after viewing her debut feature film.
Thorne announced, “The producers viewed “Color Your Hurt,'” my recently completed film, an early cut. They inquired about writing something so they could see if they enjoyed it. They did love it! Now, I am penning and directing ‘Spring Breakers 2.'”
Based on her 2024 short film Unsettled, the thriller “Color Your Hurt,” written by the actress, captivates viewers. This film traces the life and challenges faced by a gay teenager as he navigates his early years in a strict religious region. The movie wrapped its production in late 2025, but does not yet have a release date.
Furthermore, the American singer noted that the production team for Spring Breakers 2 involves some individuals from the earlier installment. They are Chris Hanle and Jordan Gertner, who have been appointed as producers. Regarding the director of the first film, Korine had previously told The Hollywood Reporter that he has “no interest” in a sequel.
The project “Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain” remains in development with no confirmed release date yet.
