The new film Mayday from writer-director Karen Cinorre whisks its protagonist, Ana (Grace Van Patten) away from her dreary, subservient life to a magical place where she is soon swept up in a troop of female warriors who spend their days on the radio in the hopes of bringing unsuspecting young sailors to the treacherous coast of their island. It’s an alluring and intriguing fantasy, one with plenty of food for thought about gender, empowerment, and who the heroes and villains of the story really are.

I had the chance to speak with two of the film’s stars, Grace Van Patten, who portrays Ana, and Soko, who plays Gert, one of the more militant members of the foursome Ana joins. This was actually my second time talking to Grace in the span of just one week thanks to her recent work in the Hulu series Nine Perfect Strangers, which put her in a very different but equally mind-bending world, and Soko shared her interest in music and the approach she took to the film and her role.

Film summary:

In director Karen Cinorre’s bold new action fantasy film Mayday, Ana (Grace Van Patten) finds herself transported to a dreamlike and dangerous coastline. Once there, she joins a female army engaged in a never-ending war where the women lure men to their deaths with radio signals, like 20th century sirens. Though Ana finds strength in this exhilarating world, she comes to realize she is not the killer they want her to be. Also starring Mia Goth, Havana Rose Liu, Soko, Théodore Pellerin and Juliette Lewis, Mayday will be released by Magnolia Pictures on October 1st in theatres and on demand.
