The official run time for The Batman has been revealed as two hours and 55 minutes, which includes approximately eight minutes of credits. The superhero film’s distributor, Warner Bros., confirmed the news today to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Batman‘s nearly three-hour run time makes it the longest solo Batman movie in history, and one of the longest overall theatrical superhero films, behind Avengers: Endgame. The 2019 Marvel drama clocked in at three hours and one minute, but it’s lengthy run time didn’t stop it from becoming the second highest-grossing movie of all time at the global box office.
The current record holder for the longest superhero film is Zack Snyder’s Justice League, whose run time is four hours and two minutes. However, the 2021 director’s cut never played in cinemas; the 2017 theatrical release clocked in two hours.
The longest of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movie trilogy was its third installment, 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, whose run time is two hours and 44 minutes. It’s predecessor, 2008’s The Dark Knight, ran for two hours and 32 minutes.
The lengthy run time for the latest Batman film comes after several other big blockbuster features clocked in at approximately two-and-a-half hours. The run time for Sony and Marvel’s latest blockbuster superhero collaboration, Spider-Man: No Way Home, is two hours and 28 minutes. Marvel’s Eternals clocked in at two hours and 36 minutes
The Batman was co-written, directed and produced by Matt Reeves. The filmmaker is known for helming movies that run for over two hours. His two entries in the 2010s Planet of the Apes film trilogy were also lengthy; War for the Planet of the Apes clocked in at two hours and 20 minutes, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ran for two hours and 10 minutes.
Warner Bros. is currently keeping its plan to distribute The Batman in theaters on March 4. However, that release date is subject to change, as the world in the midst of another COVID-19 surge, and audiences may be wary of sitting in a theater for nearly three hours.
Robert Pattinson portrays the titular role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in The Batman. The drama also stars Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman; Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler; Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon; John Turturro as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson; Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth; and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin.
The Batman follows the eponymous character in his second year of fighting crime. In the process, he uncovers corruption in Gotham City that connects to his own family, while also facing a serial killer known as the Riddler. As a result, Batman is in a disillusioned, desperate state. However, he’s soon awakened by the realization that the anger consuming him makes him no better than the ruthless serial killer he’s hunting.
