Will There be a “David Ayer’s Cut” for Suicide Squad?
Suicide Squad 1

WarnerMedia Studios CEO Anne Sarnoff has spoken out on the possibility of a David Ayers, Suicide Squad Director’s Cut.

After a long campaign by fans, Zack Snyder’s cut of his original vision for the Justice League film finally became a reality. With the dismal reviews and sheer outrage over the final product that was first released, the DC fandom feel vindicated. So what about rumors that there is also a different version of Suicide Squad out there? Are the faithful followers of the cult of DC going to win another battle to restore what they feel was an injustice to their beloved franchise? The short answer is…no.

In a recent interview with Variety, WarnerMedia Studios CEO Anne Sarnoff put it very succinctly. When asked if the world would see more director’s cuts coming out–specifically for Suicide Squad–Sarnoff pulled no punches. “We won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut.” The public outcry for the Snyder cut certainly was heard and weighed into the studios decision on moving forward with the project. It’s clear this was a one time situation. Sarnoff expanded on the motives behind the Snyder cut. “We wanted to give Zack the opportunity to complete his vision in a four-hour movie, which is impossible to do in theaters. We’re happy that we have HBO Max to let the rope out as it were and allow the fans to see all four-hours of Zack’s vision.”

Is David Ayer’s happy with the version of the film that was released?

Ayer’s has never been shy to let his feelings be known. He has stated multiple times that the version of Suicide Squad that was released was not the film he agreed to make when signing on to the project. It had been reported that the film was practically ripped from Ayer’s hands. The studio supposedly then made two cuts of the film themselves and released the version that did better in test screenings.

Shortly after Sarnoff’s comments made it to press, Ayer’s himself shot out a response via his twitter account, simply asking; “Why?” One would suspect that the Ayer’s cut would include the litany of scenes that were purportedly cut, including the many scenes of Jared Leto’s Joker that fans were expecting.

Is Warner done with Snyder?

Even though fans are happy to now have The Snyder Cut, they are now clamoring to restore Zack Snyder’s place in the DC Cinematic Universe. The Snyder Cut marks the end of Zack’s participation in the upcoming films set by DC. Many audience members want to see him continue to head the DC film slate. “I appreciate that they love Zack’s work and we are very thankful for his many contributions to DC. We’re just so happy that he could bring his cut of the “Justice League” to life because that wasn’t in the plan until about a year ago,” Sarnoff replies in regards to the trending hashtag, #restorethesnyderverse. “With that comes the completion of his trilogy. We’re very happy we’ve done this, but we’re very excited about the plans we have for all the multi-dimensional DC characters that are being developed right now.”

For now, the DC universe is going to be spread across a multitude of platforms. The cinema going DC fans though, have the James Gunn version of Suicide Squad coming their way soon. In addition, Gunn already is in the works for a spin off TV Show of the film, featuring John Cena’s Peacemaker.
