The stars of the upcoming Flamin’ Hot, from Searchlight Pictures, have been announced, according to Deadline. Actress Eva Longoria, best known for projects like Desperate Housewives, Telenovela, Grand Hotel, and Devious Maids, is stepping behind the camera to make her directorial debut. She’s in good company with the two young talents joining her: Jesse Garcia and Annie Gonzalez, who will play Frito Lay janitor Richard Montanez, the creator of the Flamin’ Hot Cheeto, and his wife Judy, respectively.
Garcia is best known for his role in Quinceañera, the 2006 film that won the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize and the ALMA Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for him. He also appears in a recent Searchlight release, Under the Same Moon, and in a small part in The Avengers. Gonzalez is an established singer and dancer who had roles in Gentefied, Vida, Shameless, and Legion. She is also set to appear in the upcoming ABC comedy pilot Bucktown opposite Jane Lynch and Nicole Richie.
According to Longoria, it has been her “biggest priority to make sure we are telling Richard Montañez’s story authentically. I am so happy to have two extremely talented and fellow Mexican Americans on board in these pivotal roles. Jesse and Annie have a deep understanding of our community and will be able to help tell this story of great importance for our culture.”
The other notable new addition to Flamin’ Hot is Linda Yvette Chavez, who created Gentefied and is in the process of adapting another Netflix project, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, which will be helmed by America Ferrera in her directorial debut. Chavez is working on the screenplay by Lewis Colick, who previously wrote Ghosts and Mississippi and October Sky, among others.
DeVon Franklin is on board as a producer, and Searchlight VP of Production Taylor Friedman and Director of Development Zahra Phillips will be overseeing for the studio. Filming will begin this summer in New Mexico.
