“Game of Thrones” Under Development as Broadway, West End Spectacular

Move over, Camelot, the Westovians are after your throne.  Your “fleeting wisp of glory” as Broadway’s iconic fantasy realm is under siege. In an exclusive story published this week, the Hollywood Reporter claims there are plans underway to bring Game of Thrones to the Great White Way as Broadway gears up for a post-pandemic revival.

But don’t expect the curtain will rise on the smash HBO series till 2023. The new production is slated to open on other platinum stages in the English-speaking world, including London’s West End and Australia.

All this is no mere royal rigamarole, given reports that Thrones novelist George R. R. Martin had recently negotiated a five-year deal to develop more content for HBO and HBO Max.

Martin will provide the story in conjunction with playwright Duncan MacMillan and director Dominic Cooke.

The show will be a prequel, its action centered around the Great Tourney at Harrenhal, an event that happened some 16 years before the main action of Game of Thrones. It is expected that many of the iconic characters in the Thrones series will appear in the production now under development.” This is expected to attract audiences curious about the origins of the epic series.

If Game of Thrones indeed becomes a Broadway blockbuster, it will join a select list of iconic productions that have made theatrical history. Writing in Esquire, Matt Miller declared:  “Every writer and world builder dreams of having their vision realized in this way. [Martin is] currently setting the groundwork for Game of Thrones to be a generation-spanning IP like Star Wars or Star Trek or Lord of the Rings or Marvel.”
