Golden Globe Winners Led by ‘West Side Story,’ ‘The Power of the Dog,’ and ‘Succession’

The 79th Golden Globe Awards were handed out tonight, but not in traditional fashion. After reports of the group’s lack of diversity in its membership and their eagerness to accept very generous gifts, NBC had announced that it would not air the broadcast this year. The postponement of other awards ceremonies due to the pandemic meant that having celebrities attend in-person, even if they agreed, probably wasn’t a great idea, so the Hollywood Foreign Press Association opted to have a private event that wouldn’t be livestreamed. Winners were announced on Twitter and on the group’s website beginning at 6pm PST/9pm EST.

West Side Story and The Power of the Dog tied for the most films wins, with three awards each. Nicole Kidman staged an upset in the drama actress race, triumphing for her role as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos. After collecting the Best Picture prize from the National Society of Film Critics earlier today, Drive My Car went home with this group’s newly renamed Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language trophy.

On the TV side, Succession scored three prizes, including Best Television Series – Drama. A few surprises came with wins for The Underground Railroad for Best Limited Series, besting expected frontrunner Mare of Easttown, which still took home a trophy for lead actress Kate Winslet. To go along with Jean Smart’s best actress win for Hacks, the freshman HBO Max comedy series snatched the top TV prize from Ted Lasso, which had won the last big contest the two were in together at the Emmy Awards. Star Jason Sudeikis won that show’s lone prize, while O Yeong-su scored a supporting actor award for the wildly popular Korean series Squid Game. Michaela Jaé Rodriguez also won a very well-deserved prize for Pose, becoming the first transgender actress to do so at the Globes.
