Greta Gerwig officially signs on to direct Margot Robbie in ‘Barbie’ movie

Lady Bird and Little Women director Greta Gerwig has officially signed on to helm a movie based on Mattel’s Barbie doll toy line and starring Margot Robbie. Gerwig is co-writing the screenplay with her real-life partner, writer-director Noah Baumbach.

Robbie recently hinted in an interview with British Vogue that Gerwig would direct the project, as well as help write it. But the extent of Gerwig’s involvement was confirmed in Variety. Robbie also told variety that the movie serves as “a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids.”

In addition to starring in the movie, Robbie also produces the film, under her LuckyChap Entertainment production, which is also produced Oscar-nominated film, “Promising Young Woman.” Production is expected to begin at Leavesden Studios in London in early 2022 for an expected 2023 theatrical release.

Gerwig and Baumbach previously collaborated together on the films Frances Ha, Mistress America and Greenberg. They are currently working on another movie called White Noise.

Robbie’s credits include Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Bombshell, Birds of Prey, Suicide Squad and I, Tonya. She will soon be seen in The Suicide Squad and Babylon
