Comic book movies are all the rage right now, and Marvel and DC are at the forefront of the battle for the box office. The competition for the lead role in one of DC’s most hotly anticipated projects has now been settled, with Leslie Grace emerging victorious as Barbara Gordon, better known by her superhero moniker that also serves as the title of the film, Batgirl. According to Deadline, other big names in the running included Isabella Merced, Zoey Deutch, and Haley Lu Richardson.
Grace has only one film credit to her name, and that’s the wildly successful In the Heights, the musical that debuted on HBO Max and in theaters last month. In that film, she plays Nina Rosario, the daughter of Jimmy Smits’ taxi company owner who returns home to Washington Heights after a stint across the country at Stanford University. Grace has also appeared in music videos and contended for awards for her music.
In DC lore, Barbara Gordon is the daughter of Commissioner Gordon and has appeared in many comics and film and TV adaptations over the years. She made an appearance in the final season of Gotham and will be played by Savannah Welch in the upcoming third season of Titans. She was portrayed by Dina Meyer in the Fox series Birds of Prey.
This Batgirl is notable because the Warner Bros. and DC Films project is headed straight to HBO Max. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are on board to direct, Christina Hodson will write the screenplay, and Kristin Burr will produce.
