Indie Spirit Awards 2022 Reveals Full List of Nominations

The nominations for the 2022 Film Indie Spirit Awards were announced this morning by actresses Beanie Feldstein, Regina Hall and Naomi Watts in a livestream broadcast.  The organization publicly shared its picks for the best independent movies and television shows of the year after the Golden Globe Awards and Critics Choice Awards released their nominees yesterday.

5 million.

A24 was the most-honored indie studio, as it received 13 Indie Spirit Awards nominations. Co-writer-director Janicza Bravo’s crime black comedy, Zola, and scribe-helmer Mike Mills’ black and white drama, C’mon C’mon, are amongst f the distributor’s most prominent contenders of the awards ceremony’s nominations.

The Indie Spirit Awards are voted on by members of Film Independent, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the impact of independent film and diversity in the movie industry and beyond. According to a press release, the base’s nomination committees were made up of 63 percent women, 5 percent non-binary people and 56 percent BIPOC voters.

Film Independent’s voting base is one of the most eclectic on the awards calendar. The organization is made up of anyone who chooses to pay for a membership, regardless of their standing in or proximity to the filmmaking industry, so it’s not unusual for the Indie Spirits’ nominees and winners to deviate from the norm of other awards ceremonies.

However, the Indie Spirits Awards’ Best Feature winner has predicted the Oscar winners in the same category multiple times in the past. The two organizations have had the same winner in the top category five times over the past decade, including last year’s Nomadland, 2017’s Moonlight, 2016’s Spotlight, 2015’s Birdman and 2014’s 12 Years A Slave.

On the acting side, the Indie Spirit Awards also tend to honor a mix of  Academy Award contenders and smaller titles. Last year, eight Indie Spirit Award acting nominees and winners also received Oscar nominations, including Promising Young Woman‘s Carey Mulligan Sound of Metal star Riz Ahmed. Minari‘s supporting actress Yuh-Jung Youn, also won both the Indie Spirit Award and Academy Award.

The Indie Spirits Awards has recently made a big shift in the date of its ceremony; it was previously held during the same weekend as the Oscars. The 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony will be handed in person out on Sunday, March 6 during IFC’s telecast, before the Academy Awards is held on March 27.
