Canadian-born filmmaker James Cameron has confirmed that his Lightstorm company will be producing a film adaptation of Joe Abercrombie’s best-selling novel The Devils, with the duo poised to co-write the script. But the project will have to wait until Cameron has completed his work on Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Abercrombie, who has been acclaimed for his fantasy books such as The First Law and Age of Madness, also worked on the fourth season of Netflix’s animation series, Love, Death & Robots.
The Devils will not be connected in any way with Ken Russell’s similarly named film in the 1970s. It has been described a “dark fantasy epic” about monsters tasked with saving medieval Europe from flesh-eating elves.
Cameron stated his reasons for taking on the project: “I’ve loved Joe’s writing for years, cherishing each new read, throughout the epic cycle of the First Law books, especially Best Served Cold (LOVE IT!) and the Age of Madness trilogy. But the freshness of the world and the characters in The Devils finally got me off my butt to buy one of his books and partner with him to bring it to the screen.
“I’m looking forward to the writing process with him, though I’m certain this adaptation will practically write itself because Joe writes very visually, almost in scenes, and with a very cinematic structure,” he continued. “I can’t wait to dig into this as I wind down on Avatar: Fire and Ash. It will be a joyful new challenge for me to bring these indelible characters to life.”
It’s not yet been confirmed whether Cameron himself will be directing the film adaptation of Abeercrombie’s epic. He had earlier made a name for himself by directing The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), and Avatar (2009) and its sequels. His most acclaimed work, Titanic (1997), won an Oscar for Best Picture and also won him an Academy Award for Best Director.
