James Wan Says ‘The Conjuring 4’ May Be the Final Film in the Hit Horror Franchise

After it was announced in October that a fourth Conjuring movie is in development, series creator James Wan revealed that the anticipates sequel may be the last entry in the franchise. The filmmaker, who directed the series’ first two installments and produced the third entry, shared the news while speaking with Collider about his latest horror movie, M3GAN.

Writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick will be returning to the franchise to pen the script for the upcoming Conjuring film. He previously scribed the screenplays for The Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The latter movie pushed the entire series to over $2 billion at the global box office, making it the most successful horror franchise in history.

While discussing M3GAN, the upcoming killer doll film he produced that will be released in theaters on Friday, with Collider, Wan ensured fans that The Conjuring series is near and dear to his heart. He added that the creative team is very mindful when they begin crafting a story about Ed and Lorraine Warren. He said:

“Yeah, we are working on it right now. With the Conjuring films, we are very precious about [them]. And so we kind of want to just take our time to make sure we get it right and to make sure the emotion of the Warren stories that we want to tell, and moving into, and potentially wrapping up, we just want to make sure that it’s the right thing, the right story that we’re telling.”

When he was asked if he’s potentially wrapping up The Conjuring franchise with the upcoming third follow-up, Wan added: “We never know. You never know. We’ll see.”

Along with Johnson-McGoldrick returning to write the fourth movie, stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are also confirmed to reprise their roles as the Warrens. Wan and Peter Safran will return to the franchise as producers.

Little else is known about The Conjuring‘s upcoming third sequel. However, the core films of the series are always inspired by the case files of the real Warrens, two of the most well-known paranormal investigators in American history.

No other cast have been announced yet to The Conjuring 4, and no director is attached yet. But Michael Chaves, who helmed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, likely won’t fill the director’s chair, as he’s currently filming a prequel in the franchise with The Nun 2.

The second Nun film, which will be released in theaters on September 8, 2023, will once again feature Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene. Wan has teased the possibility of having both Farmiga sisters’ characters meet in the feature.
