Jonathan Daviss, the star of ‘Outer Banks‘, will be playing the role of Snoop Dogg in Universal’s upcoming biopic about the legendary rap star. Snoop Dogg himself will be producing the film, which is described by Universal as the “definitive biopic about the entertainment mogul and icon. In addition to his role as Pope in “Outer Banks,” Daviss also starred in Netflix’s teen black comedy “Do Revenge” and appeared in “Age of Summer” and “Edge of the World.”

Craig Brewer will be directing the project, the first in Death Row Pictures’ arrangement with NBCU Universal Entertainment & Studios. Brewer’s previous directorial credits have included “Dolemite Is My Name”, “Hustle and Flow”, and the forthcoming “Song Sung Blue.” The will be revising a screenplay for the Snoop Dogg film that was written by Joe Robert Cole, who scripted the two “Black Panther” movies and one on O. J. Simpson.

In announcing the project back in 2022, Universal’s head Donna Langley was quoted as saying: “Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy make him one of the most exciting and influential icons in popular culture. We met with Snoop shortly after he acquired Death Row Records and had the opportunity to hear his story in his own words. We are humbled to be able to create the lasting document of this singular artist.”

Universal has produced several other biopics about musical legends, including “8 Mile” (2002) starring Eminem, which took in $250 million at the box office and won an Oscar for the song “Lose Yourself.” Its 2015 film “Straight Outta Compton,” about the N.W.A. rap group, featured an appearance by Snoop Dogg as played by Lakeith Stanfield. That film took in $200 million and won an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.

The Snoop Doggy Dog biopic will be overseen by a Universal SVP Production Development team that includes Ryan Jones and Tony Ducret.
