Maggie Gyllenhaal Reportedly Set to Direct ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’ Remake Starring Christian Bale

Director Maggie Gyllenhaal is reportedly poised to direct Netflix’s upcoming remake of The Bride of Frankenstein. While few details are known about the project, it’s being reported that production may begin sometime during 2024, with Peter Sarsgaard and Christian Bale playing leading roles, though it’s not clear which will be the scientist and which will be the monster.

Sarsgaard is Gyllenhaal’s husband.

To be titled simply The Bride, the film would be Gyllenhaal’s second film after The Lost Daughter, a psychological drama she directed in 2021 that earned three Oscar nominations.

The classic Bride of Frankenstein film, released in 1935, starred Boris Karloff reprising the role of the monster that he had portrayed in the original Frankenstein flick in 1931. In the 1935 movie, Dr. Frankenstein is persuaded to concoct a mate for the monster he’d made in his laboratory.

Over the years, several actors have appeared in various Frankenstein-themed films, including Colin Clive, Peter Cushing, and Christopher Lee.

Christian Bale is no stranger to the macabre. The British-born actor appeared as the serial killer Patrick Bateman in American Psycho (2000) and played the title role in The Machinist (2004). He garnered much critical acclaim for his roles in The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). More recently, he played the role of the villainous Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder, a 2022 offering by Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Several years back, Universal tried to develop a remake of The Bride of Frankenstein that was to be directed by Bill Condon of Gods and Monsters fame. In 1985, Columbia Pictures released The Bride, which starred Sting as Baron Charles Frankenstein; Jennifer Beals as Eva, the bride; and Clancy Brown as Viktor, the monster. A24 and Apple had announced several years ago that they were interested in filming Bride with Scarlett Johansson, but nothing has yet come of those plans.
