Netflix Is Officially Getting into the Video Game Market

Back in April, we reported that Netflix was considering a future in gaming. That move has become official now with the hiring of Mike Verdu as vice president of game development, a position that will report directly to Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters, according to Bloomberg. Verdu comes to Netflix with a proven background in gaming, with a work history at Electronic Arts and Facebook, where he focused on bringing games to VR headsets.

Apparently, the plan will be to have games available as another viewing option for users, added as an alternative genre to be selected on the Netflix main menu.

At this juncture, there likely won’t be an additional fee to unlock the content, and it’s not clear whether these downloadable games will be usable only on mobile devices or whether they can eventually be accessed also on TV sets.

After talk of these plans was first leaked several months ago, Axios broke down the news and added a bit of insider information about the likely Netflix approach. One theory was to “‘think of it as a smaller Apple Arcade,’ a reference to Apple’s offering of high-quality, ad-free mobile games offered to paying subscribers” (though Apple does charge extra) while the library would probably “consist of a mix of licensed Netflix intellectual property and original work commissioned from independent studios, offered to existing Netflix subscribers.”

Netflix stock has already risen considerably following this news, while rivals like GameStop Corp. have been seeing the opposite trend. Forbes warns against people “letting their imaginations run wild with what this is going to be like” given that there is still little information on exactly what the end result and the timing, which may be 2022, will actually be.
