The Yu Yu Hakusho story is based on a manga series created by Yoshihiro Togashi that had been adapted into an anime series seen on Japan’s Fuji TV in the 1990s. An English-language version of the series ran from 2002 to 2006. The franchise has also spawned a series of original video animations, audio albums, video games, and other merchandise.

According to Netflix: “The manga revolves around Yusuke Urameshi, a junior high school student who spends his days getting into fights and dies in an accident while trying to protect a young child.

Yusuke is given a chance to be revived and becomes an Underworld Detective, becoming entwined in a mystery that envelopes the human, demon, and spirit worlds.”

In the upcoming release, Tatsumi Kitamura will play the lead role of the delinquent Yusuke. Other actors include Shuhei Uesugi as Kazuma Kuwabara, Jun Shison as Kurama, and Kanata Hongō as Hiei.

The new live-action series is being directed by Shō Tsukikawa from a script by Togashi and Tatsurō Mishima, and is being produced by Kazutaka Sakamoto and Teru Morii.

The 57-year-old Yoshihiro Togashi is one of Japan’s most prolific manga artists, despite serious back problems that have plagued him for years. In addition to Yu Yu Hakusho, he created the Hunter x Hunter series, both of which became best-sellers. Yu Yu Hakusho has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide, and Hunter x Hunter sold more than 55 million copies in Japan between its 1998 release and the summer of 2011. Togashi also wrote the two-chapter manga, Akuten Wars, which was illustrated by Hachi Mizuno and published in 2017.
