Oscar Shortlists Announced in Ten Categories

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the Oscar’s Shortlists in ten categories for the 96th Academy Awards. The official announcement includes finalists in the categories of Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects.

The film with the most mentions was Barbie, which benefited from having three original songs, only two of which can ultimately be nominated, along with advancements in the makeup and hairstyling and sound fields. Next up was Killers of the Flower Moon with four mentions and an international entry, the Spain’s Society of the Snow, which is in the running for makeup and hairstyling, score, and visual effects, in addition to the category formerly known as Best Foreign Film.

Of the fifteen films shortlisted for Best International Feature, three are from Asian countries. Perfect Days, from Japan, earned an expected mention, while Bhutan and director Pawo Choyning Dorji have the chance to earn the country’s second-ever nomination for The Monk and the Gun following the inclusion of Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom two years ago. Armenia also stands to earn its first-ever nomination for Amerikatsi. Two other foreign films, 20 Days in Mariupol and Four Daughters, from Ukraine and Tunisia, respectively, appear on the shortlists for both Documentary Feature and International Feature.

Nominations in these ten categories and the additional thirteen races will be announced on Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024. Check out the shortlisted films in all ten categories below!
