Razzie Awards “Honor” the Worst of the Year

The winners of the 41st Annual Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzies, have been announced. In a year with fewer big-budget releases than normal, the list of nominees for the worst of the year still included plenty of high-profile names like Bruce Willis, Adam Sandler, and Anne Hathaway. Dolittle, starring Robert Downey Jr., was awarded Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel.

The winner of the Worst Picture prize was Absolute Proof, an alleged documentary about the 2020 election results being influenced by China. It also won Worst Actor for co-director and star Mike Lindell, better known as the “My Pillow” guy. The Razzies have in the past chosen real-life figures to skewer for their minimal film appearances. Donald Trump himself previously won worst actor and worst screen combo prizes in 2018 for his appearances in Death of a Nation and Fahrenheit 11/9. This year, Rudy Giuliani won both of those awards for his cameo in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. His credited screen partner was “his pants zipper.”

Though Giuliani’s presence and citation here isn’t meant to imply that the film is necessarily bad, this does constitute an interesting overlap between this list and awards bodies that praise people’s work. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is nominated for two Oscars, for supporting actress Maria Bakalova and its screenplay. Glenn Close is actually contending for the same performance she was nominated for her at the Oscars in Hillbilly Elegy, and she’s not the first to do so: Amy Irving achieved that feat back in 1983 for Yentl. Surprise Golden Globe pick Music won three of its four Razzie nominations, for Worst Director Sia, Worst Actress Kate Hudson, and Worst Supporting Actress Maddie Ziegler.
