Universal Pictures has unveiled the teaser trailer for “Wicked: For Good,” the upcoming second “Wicked” movie, which adapts the back half of the musical.
Both films were shot back-to-back, but the second film begins years after the events of the first. Elphaba, now an enemy of the state of Oz and dubbed the Wicked Witch of the West.
At the same time, Glinda has become a public figure controlled by the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). The consequences of the choices made at the end of the first film now play out here in the second.
The first film was both a critical smash and commercial success, the highest-grossing movie musical of all time as well as landing ten Oscar nominations, including wins for costume and production design.
Director Jon M. Chu told to Vanity Fair that the second film is “so different from movie one” but adds that some aspects of the sequel will shed light on choices made in the first one: “Things that you may have noticed in movie one, you’ll see why those things are there. It is designed to be seen big and felt deeply.”
One disadvantage is that most of the musical’s most well-known songs are in the first half; the second has a few notable ones, including “For Good,” “Thank Goodness,” “No Good Deed”, and “As Long as You’re Mine”. The second film also has two new songs – one each for Glinda and Elphaba.
“Wicked: For Good” is set to open in cinemas on November 12th.
