Netflix has released a new trailer for “Velvet Goldmine” and “Carol” director Todd Haynes’ latest melodrama “May December” which premiered at Cannes where the streamer quickly acquired it for $11 million.

“May December” is set twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, [as] a married couple (Julianne Moore and Charles Melton) buckles under the pressure when an actress (Natalie Portman) arrives to do research for a film about their past.” When Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry (Portman) comes to spend time with the family, which also includes Gracie and Joe’s teenaged twins, to better understand Gracie, family dynamics unravel under the pressure of Elizabeth’s gaze. Ad Joe, having never fully processed what happened in his youth, starts to confront the reality of life as an empty-nester at 36.

Todd Haynes’ tenth feature film, “May December,” reunites the director with his longtime collaborator and star Julianne Moore,  she worked with Haynes on “Safe,” “Wonderstruck,” and “Far from Heaven.” Besides Portman and Moore, the film casts  also Piper Curda, Elizabeth Yu, and Gabriel Chung, who play Moore and Melton’s on-screen children.

“May December” is from a Black List script by Samy Burch with a story by Burch and Alex Mechanik. This latest film doesn’t feature DP Edward Lachman.

You just can’t imagine a Haynes movie without Lachman’s sultry photography.

The duo were set to shoot their sixth collaboration together with “May December,” but Lachman broke his hip and wasn’t able to collaborate. So Christopher Blauvelt, a longtime collaborator of Haynes’ close friend Kelly Reichardt, stepped in to replace Lachman and he does an incredible job here.

 It is set to open the 61st New York Film Festival, making its North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall, on September 29th.
