Nouvelle Vague | Official Trailer | Starring Zoey Deutch, Directed by Richard Linklater

Netflix released today the official trailer for Nouvelle Vague, the dramedy that honors the French New Wave movement. Richard Linklaters directed the movie, which chronicles the shooting of Breathless in 1959. The latter was one the first feature films of the titular Nouvelle Vague era of French cinema.

Zoey Deutch plays American actress Jean Seberg in the upcoming dramedy. The latter performer became an icon of the French New Wave after she starred in Breathless. Guillaume Marbeck portrays Jean-Luc Godard, and Aubry Dullin plays Jean-Paul Belmondo, in Nouvelle Vague.

The new feature had its world premiere in May at the Cannes Film Festival. Nouvelle Vague then when on to make its U.S. premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.

Deutsch spoke to IndieWire about what she saw as parallels between Linklater and Godard while at the Colorado-based festival. “They are two artists that have maintained their artistic integrity as filmmakers that do what they want to do and make movies that they want to make, not what other people want to see,” she noted.

“That is a rare quality. Even the greatest filmmakers of all time, most of them, waver at one point or another, and that’s OK. It is astonishing that [Rick] has never wavered from doing things that he wants to do for himself — not selfishly, but because that’s what you do. You make things that live inside of you that you have to get out and then it relates to other people. He and Godard share that quality,” the actress added.

The movie will open in U.S. theaters on October 31. The dramedy will then premiere on Netflix on November 14.

Nouvelle Vague shot entirely in Paris, mostly in French with an exclusively French crew, and in black and white. The film, which serves as Linklater’s love letter to cinema, also features characters like Jean Cocteau, Robert Bresson, Roberto Rossellini, Jean-Pierre Melville, Eric Rohmer, Agnes Varda and Jacques Rivette

Godard directed Breathless with a hand-held camera on the streets of Paris. The crime drama’s production was chaotic and partially improvised. The filmmaker crafted the project’s basic story with fellow New Wave icons Claude Chabrol and François Truffaut. After the shoot wrapped, Godard won the Golden Bear for directing at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1960.

Netflix acquired Nouvelle Vague for a record $4 million just after the feature received an 11-minute ovation at its premiere at Cannes.

Holly Gent, Vincent Palmo Jr., Michèle Halberstadt and Laetitia Masson co-wrote the upcoming movie. Laurent Pétin and Michèle Pétin served as producers.

Linklater most recently directed the biographical comedy, Blue Moon, which stars his frequent collaborator, Ethan Hawke. Deutch is known for starring in such films as The Threesome, Juror #2, Zombieland: Double Tap and Set It Up.
