Christopher Abbott is slated to replace Ryan Gosling in the next Wolf Man movie, scheduled for release on October 25, 2024, just six days before Halloween. Abbott most recently appeared in Poor Things, and starred opposite Tom Holland in the Apple miniseries The Crowded Room. His other credits include Girls, Martha Marcy May Marlene and Catch-22.
Details about the upcoming production were first reported in an exclusive story by The Hollywood Reporter.
Gosling had barely sunk his teeth in the Blumhouse/Universal thriller, having appeared in the title role for the past three years. He will, however, be credited as one of the executive producers for the upcoming film. The picture will be directed by Leigh Whannell, who was originally tapped for the job that Derek Cianfrance had taken over in 2021. Whannell is perhaps best known as the director of The Invisible Man, starring Elizabeth Moss, which debuted in 2020 during the pandemic.
The official synopsis for the upcoming Wolf Man film describes Abbott’s character as “a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.” Though details about the plot are still under wraps, it’s known that the script has been written by Whannell in league with Rebecca Angelo, Lauren Schuker Blum, and Corbett Tuck. Angelo and Blum had earlier written the acclaimed dramedy Dumb Money.
This is not the first time that a vulpine character has emerged from the darkroom. It’s been 82 years since Lon Chaney Jr. frightened audiences with 1941’s The Wolf Man, one of Hollywood’s classic horror flicks. A more recent version, The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del Toro, was released in 2010.
Director Leigh Whannell is an Australian-born filmmaker who scripted several films with his friend James Wan, including Saw (2004), Dead Silence (2007), Insidious (2010), and Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013). Whannell made his directorial debut in 2015 with Insidious: Chapter 3. In 2022, he was reportedly in talks with Amasia Entertainment and Universal Pictures to direct a reboot of one of the Green Hornet films.
