The latest film from director Steven Soderbergh has been announced as the centerpiece gala selection for the 20th Tribeca Film Festival. In a press release, the world premiere for No Sudden Move was set for an outdoor screening on June 18th at 8pm at The Battery in downtown Manhattan. The film is already slated to debut on HBO Max two weeks later on July 1st.
No Sudden Move is set in 1950s Detroit and, per the film’s official description, “centers on a group of small-time criminals who are hired to steal what they think is a simple document. When their plan goes horribly wrong, their search for who hired them weaves them through a race-torn, rapidly changing city.” An all-star cast is led by Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, David Harbour, Ray Liotta, and Jon Hamm.
Fresh off producing the tepidly-received Academy Awards ceremony, Soderbergh is now seeing a more high-profile launch for this film than his previous project, Let Them All Talk, which premiered on HBO Max last December. Soderbergh got his start at the Sundance Film Festival thirty-two years with his first feature film, Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Since then, he has directed more than thirty films. He won an Oscar in 2000 for Traffic, and was also nominated against himself that year for Erin Brockovich. He previously collaborated with Del Toro on the two-part Che in 2008.
